Kitchen Cabinets and Countertops: How Your Choices Affect the Project

Cabinets and countertops usually decide the look, the schedule, and a large share of the budget.

Cabinet types

  • Stock: pre-built in standard sizes. Typically the quickest, with fewer options.
  • Semi-custom: standard boxes with more sizes, finishes and modifications.
  • Custom: built to your layout and specs. The most flexibility, usually the longest lead time.

Shaker-style doors in white, natural wood tones or dark finishes are popular. You can see several in our projects.

Countertop materials

  • Quartz: engineered stone, widely used for its consistent look and easy care.
  • Granite: natural stone with unique patterns. Usually sealed periodically.
  • Marble and marble-look stone: a classic look. Natural marble can etch and stain, so go in knowing how you will use it.

Why measurements come first

Countertops are templated after cabinets are installed, then fabricated. Ordering early and confirming lead times keeps the schedule predictable.

Hardware and details

Pulls, knobs, crown molding, under-cabinet lighting and appliance panels change the finished look more than most people expect. Decide them before ordering.
